Grade level: 7-9
This class will coverThe Odyssey, the blind bard’s epic sequel to The Iliad. After the Trojan War, the man of many turns, Odysseus, wends his way slowly home to his kingdom in Ithaca. Will his wife Penelope and son Telemachus welcome him after twenty years absence? Along the way, he and his men face mythical creatures which pose terrible obstacles and beautiful nymphs who work to change their minds. Blessing and wrath, challenge and consequences are set before them by the gods.
We will read large selections of the Robert Fitzgerald translation in full. We will wrestle with the idea of true agency of choice in light of the gods' involvement, watch Odysseus test the bounds of the Greek guest-friendship known as xenia, and follow up with some feasting of our own. As we consider Homer’s art of storytelling, we will create our own epithets, talk about “going home”, look for echoes in other stories and finally offer our voices in commonplace book writing and the final project.

Why has Europe had such a profound influence on the history, politics, and culture of the entire world? The answer lies in its geography. In this course, students will not only explore the countries, cities, physical features, and climates of Europe, but they will examine how these have shaped civilization. In a visually rich and interactive teaching environment, students will develop skills in geographic literacy and an appreciation for the connections between people and place.

In the Elizabethan era, the twelfth night of Christmas was a time when established social norms were turned upside down. Twelfth Night draws on this topsy-turvy spirit: fools speak wisdom, identities are mistaken, and even the most rigidly proper characters become the objects of ridicule. Through these reversals, Shakespeare explores questions of social order, identity, and what it means to belong.
In this class, students will step into the playful chaos of the play by reading, discussing, and performing key scenes. They will also collaborate to create original trailers, inviting us into Shakespeare’s world.
